CELEBRATING THE SAINTS 

On June 24, the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist. John the Baptist was Jesus' cousin, and he baptized Jesus in the Jordan River. John led a simple life. He pointed his followers toward Christ instead of calling attention to himself. He was only concerned with the Kingdom of God and always spoke of love and truth. He is a model of how to live a life in Christ. 

 St. Peter and St. Paul – June 29th 

Peter and Paul are two significant characters from the Early Church. Peter was the most frequently mentioned member of the original 12 Apostles, who travelled with Jesus throughout His Public Ministry and could testify to the Resurrection. Jesus foretold that this apostle would be the rock upon which the Church would be built.  Despite Peter's betrayal of Jesus after His Arrest, St Peter led the Apostles, became the first pope and was martyred for his faith. Paul was converted from a strict Jew who persecuted Christians to the greatest missionary of Christianity: the Apostle of the Gentiles. He is the author of most of the Letters of the New Testament.

YOUNG MARY PERFORMANCE 

On Monday 21st June, Glenn and Taylor from Starrs Productions visited our school to perform 'Young Mary'.  This play introduced us to Young Mary  Mackillop, and it retold many fun-filled and spirited childhood adventures of St. Mary Mackillop. We learnt about her pet cow Blorac and her dad Alexander. We learnt about how Mary grew up to be a determined and hard-working young woman who sets out to eliminate poverty and provide a fair education for all. 

Students laughed all the way through the funny, interactive and entertaining play. They enjoyed learning about St. Mary Mackillop's humour and compassion while gaining a further understanding of her famous quote, "Never see a need, without doing something about it." 

"It was cool and very funy. I like Kelly. He was a poor child that Mary helped." Mitchell, Yr. 2 

"I thought it was good that they shared stories and we could learn more about what was happening when Mary Mackillop was alive." Siri, Yr. 4. 
"I thought the play was good because there was lots of laughter and fun. The most interesting story was where Mary travelled a long way across Australia to visit one of the sisters that had been in an accident. Mary wanted to get there in a hurry and she found a way no matter what." Cruz, Yr. 5.

We pray for the grace to be good friends. 

May we be a gentle presence in the life of our friends, ever willing to listen, to forgive and to extend hospitality. 

Remind us of the importance of friendship so that we may take time to nourish these precious relationships. 

We make these prayers in the name of Jesus, who knew what it meant to be a good friend.

Dear Parents, Caregivers, Staff, Students and Friends,  

Term 2 is nearly over, and to celebrate we will have a winter woolly or pyjama day event on the last day of school, Friday, July 2, to raise much-needed funds to support the St Vincent De Paul winter appeal. Through the generosity of our community, we ask that the students who wear casual (winter warm) clothing to donate $2.00. Monies raised will go towards the Winter Appeal and provide emergency relief to people at risk and experiencing homelessness. Our donation will help the Vinnie volunteers to rebuild lives, support the marginalised in our community and fund new projects. Understanding, generosity and selfless service are greatly enhanced by our participation in these types of fundraising events.   

Many thanks to our teachers for all their work this Semester and especially for the many hours, before and after school, preparing school reports. These reports will be sent home to families in individual envelopes today. If you have any concerns please contact your child’s class teacher.  

School Uniforms Update 

Due to the colder weather and the senior students leaving at the end of the year, the Year 6/7 students ONLY are permitted to wear tracksuit pants without the school logo.  The tracksuit pants must match the school colors of Navy, or Black is permitted.  No labels, leggings or skins are permitted.  

School Holidays 

Term 2 concludes on Friday July 2nd at 2.20 pm.

Reminder this school holidays for OLOR are 3 weeks.

Term 3 – Week 1 (Monday,  July 19 – Friday July 23) – STUDENT FREE DAYS at Our Lady of the River School for staff to attend a Josephite Retreat, Inclusive Education training and teacher observations in Catholic Schools in Adelaide.  These days are approved pupil free days from the School Board. Please note these days in your diary.

You would be aware that our work at Our Lady of the River School is influenced by the CESA Living, Learning, Leading framework. This framework outlines the capabilities that will lead students to achieve Australian Schooling goals and become a thriving, capable learner, a leader for the world God desires.

This continua will help students reflect on their development and support them to flourish into the best version of themselves that they have been called to be. At the end of this term, students will use this resource with their teachers to set goals to improve their learning.

Hi all,

On Friday, 28^th May a number of 6/7 students travelled to the Steve Poutakidis Playing Fields in Renmark to compete in the SAPSASA Riverland District Soccer Carnival. The girls played a fantastic brand of soccer, making it all the way to the grand final only to fall short by 1 goal against a strong St. Josephs Barmera team. The boys also tried their hardest, drawing 3 out of their 4 games. All students conducted themselves well on the day and showed great sportsmanship. I would like to thank super coach Pat Perre and tactician Luke Cotter for helping out on the day.

Students from Year 5, 6 and 7 will also be competing for the Westies Cup today in the Girl’s 9-aside Football Carnival held at Glassey Park. OLOR has nominated two teams to compete, which is a fantastic result for both our school and girl’s footy in general. We wish them the best of luck!

Anastasia, Nate, Jack, Rahill, Royan, and Mr Perre represented the Riverland region in the South Australian Junior Soccer Associations State Championships on the June long weekend.  Our students walked away with some wins and losses. Overall It was a great weekend of soccer skill and fair play. Congratulations to all OLOR representatives, especially to Anastasia, who has been invited to train with the State Squad. 

In Week 7, the year 4’s put in a great effort to prepare and host their assembly.

Students shared their learning from their religion lessons about racial purity. In Jesus’s time, people and places and things were considered clean or unclean. This was called Ritual Purity. In the Jewish religion, people had to be Ritually Pure to be able to enter the temple. Ritual uncleanliness is NOT the same as ordinary uncleanliness such as dirt stains. Each student made a poster about Ritual Purity.

We have also been learning about living conditions in 18^th century Britain and the journey of the First Fleet. Students researched a convict to find out their crime, sentence, and other facts. Students used this information to write a historical recount from the perspective of their convict.

We have recently started learning about procedural texts. We identified the type of language that should be used in procedural texts and then followed the steps to create a balloon rocket!

 

 

In Week 10, our students will be visiting the Life Education Dome, which will be set up in our school hall. Life Education is a mobile health program that promotes student's physical, social and emotional health and wellbeing. It delivers an interactive curriculum based program to Preschools, Primary and Secondary schools, and is presented by expert educators in the field of health and wellbeing. This year Life Education Educator, Emily Petmann,  will be working with each class on different topics centred around health and wellbeing.
