Dear Parents, Caregivers, Staff, Students and Friends,
On August 30, Our Lady of the River welcomed during an assembly Olympian rower, Gold and Silver medalist Alexander Hill. Now out of COVID-19 isolation, Alex was keen to see his cousin, Charlie Kregar, in Year 3 at his school and make a surprise visit. Charlie was indeed surprised and enjoyed sitting on the stage with Alex. At the same time, Alex talked to the audience about his early life, becoming involved in sports and rowing, and his journey to becoming an Olympian.
He also talked about his intensive training regime in Canberra to achieve what he has done so far in the sport of rowing. He answered many questions from the students about how he felt while competing and winning a Gold Medal in the recent Olympic Games in Tokyo.
The students and staff both loved the visit from Alex, he spoke for about an hour, and all those present appreciated getting to hold his medals and having a photo with our local Olympic champion.
Father's Day Prayer
God,
Bless all the fathers in the world.
Father, we ask that You guide them to be good role models and loving to their children.
We also ask that You help them to be a father like You are.
Give them grace and patience to handle situations in a loving way.
Amen.
This Sunday, September 5, we celebrate Father's Day. Father's Day is a celebration of fathers and father figures, honouring fatherhood and the role fathers play in our society. Jesus was entrusted into the care of St Joseph. Knowing that Jesus was the Son of God, St Joseph took the responsibility of being Jesus' Father on Earth very seriously. Joseph loved Jesus, guided him and showed him how to work hard and to grow into the man Jesus was to become.
On Father's Day, we show our father figures in our lives what special place they hold in our hearts and what influence they have on us. Spend the day caring for or thinking about how much you love your father or father figure.
National Child Protection Week 5-12 September
Child protection is everyone's business. At Our Lady of the River, we are mandatory reporters, and we have policies and procedures in place to ensure the safety of all children at the school. We greatly value the support of parents and carers in providing a safe school environment. The National Association to Prevent Child Abuse & Neglect (NAPCAN) is an organisation dedicated to preventing Child Abuse and Neglect. Their website has many valuable resources, contacts and information to inform, guide and assist parents in this important area. Check their website for more details at https://www.napcan.org.au/.
Theme: Every child in every community needs a fair go.
To treat all Australia's children fairly, we need to ensure every family and community has what kids need to thrive and be healthy.
RUOK Day?
This day is about inspiring and empowering people to connect meaningfully with others around them and start a conversation with those in their world who may be struggling with everyday life. You do not need to be an expert to reach out - just a great listener. RUOK? DAY encourages people to reach out and engage in conversations with others while raising mental health and well-being awareness. Some fun ways to participate include sharing affirmations or random acts of kindness. This year, the message is? Are they really OK? Ask them today? RUOK? DAY is on Thursday, September 9 2021.
The Importance of Breakfast Daily
Eating a healthy breakfast before starting the school day is linked to improved concentration, better results, increased energy, a higher intake of vitamins and minerals, and even healthier body weight. Breakfast is essential for young students whose brains use up about half of the body's energy. Would you please let your child's teacher know at any time if the breakfast meal is missed because we can support this on any given day?
Year 6 and 7's Prepare for High School
Many families have decided or will be making the important decision of where their child will be attending High School in 2022. A survey to indicate your choice of High School will be sent to the Year 6 and Year 7 families next week.
If you are still considering your options, please contact the Principal of St Francis of Assisi College, Mr. Nathan Hayes.

Book Week
At OLOR we love books so it only makes sense that Book Week is one of our most favourite weeks! Throughout the week there were many opportunities to share a book with a buddy, staff held craft activities during lunch times that linked with the nominated Book Week books and Read Alouds were plentiful! Our parade took place on Wednesday morning and was a buzz of excitement. For the first time ever this was live streamed on Facebook, this allowed everyone to attend 'virtually' including our 6/7's on camp on Kangaroo Island. A big thank you to all the parents who put so much effort into their child's costume. Congratulations to Angus C, Angus DC, Kaiden, Olivia, Mitchell, Monica and Bailey who were drawn from our lucky dip prize and won themselves a new book to whisk them away to a "Old World, New World or Other World."

Leader of Learning
On Tuesday 31st of August, our choir performed at the Chaffey Theatre as part of the Riverland Primary Schools' Music Festival. We joined a number of other schools from around the Riverland to perform in front of a huge audience. All students involved have put it in an enormous effort to attend weekly rehearsals and memorise the repertoire. They all performed in a professional manner and should all be very proud of themselves. A special mention goes out to Yvette and Raahil who sang as soloists and were fantastic role models to our younger choir members.
Jade De-Gregorio
Hi all,
It has been a big couple of weeks in school sport for Our Lady of the River!
On Friday 20th August, fourteen OLOR students travelled to Loxton to compete in the SAPSASA Riverland Basketball Carnival. Our boys showed strong competitiveness throughout the day, winning 3 out of their 5 games. The girls made it all the way to the grand final through excellent basketball prowess and teamwork. I would also like to thank both Mel Pfeiler and Meg O’Leary Fletcher for all their help on the day with coaching, scoring and umpiring.
Congratulations to Nate Vallelonga, Royan Kipkosgei, Jack Hunter, Archie Kent, Slater Marsden, Tatam Hunt, Bella Gates, Miley Mitchell, Gurmanpreet Kaur and Buvnoor Kaur for being selected in their respective Riverland SAPSASA District Soccer teams. All teams competed at West Beach in Adelaide this week over the span of three days.
Well done to Oliver Sims on his recent selection in the Riverland SAPSASA District Hockey team that competed in Adelaide from Monday 30th August to Wednesday 1st September. Oliver said that it was great experience because of the opportunity to test his skills against some of the best in the state.
Have a great weekend!
Year 6 SAPSASA Soccer
Ruby, Buvnoor and Gurmanpreet took part in the Statewide Year 6 SAPSASA Soccer Carnival in Adelaide this week. All girls featured in the best players and did their part for the Riverland Team. Hope you had a great week girls (results to come).
Kind regards,
Mr Tom Charlton

Year 6/7 Camp to Kangaroo Island
In Week 6, the Year 6 and 7 classes attended a weeklong camp on Kangaroo Island. We enjoyed many experiences and activities on the Island, led by our driver, Hamish. The first activity we did on our camp was go to Cape Willoughby where we had three activities to do. A trail to follow, one of the biggest lanterns to see and climb up a lighthouse. After that we went to Prospect Hill, where we climbed 300 steps and enjoyed amazing views over the island.
On Tuesday, we were given a tour by Hamish and Craig in Flinders Chase National Park where we saw the area of the island that had been burned in the 2019/20 Summer bushfires. We got to walk around Remarkable Rocks and descended down to Admirals Arch where we saw heaps of seals! Then, we went to a wildlife park where we could feed animals and look around at them.
On the third day, we went to emu ridge where we learned how to make eucalyptus and learnt its many uses. Then we went to the honey farm and saw the bees up close. We also went on the ocean safari where we got to see dolphins out at sea and seals laying on the rocks. Paul liked doing donuts on the boat.
Thursday was the punctuation mark of camp! We went to Seal Bay where we learnt that they are the last colony on the island because they were hunted. Luke liked how fat and funny the seals looked. Next up we went to Raptor Domain and experienced a birds of prey demonstration. Some of us got to have a bird sit on our lap and some got to hold them. Ashlyn loved the opportunity to hold an owl specie.
We went to the sand dunes which was what most of the class was looking forward to. Asher liked how fast you could go down the dunes and Miley liked faceplanting, while Emma liked watching other people fall of their boards whilst sandboarding. On that night we played the chocolate game which Mrs Oates loved. Even Father Hau joined in!
On the last day we walked along the Independence Trail at American River. For lunch, we stopped at Brown Beach to have a sandcastle building competition. We then headed back home. We arrived back at school at approximately 8pm. It was a long journey! All of us really enjoyed our trip to Kangaroo Island and we look forward to seeing many other classes going and experiencing the amazing opportunity of seeing this beautiful island.
The Year 5's were pleased to host the Week 5 assembly, where we shared our information reports and showed a video of us sharing our writing with the Foundation and Year 1 class.
This term we have been writing 'Quick Writes' where students try out some of the language they hear in our class read aloud. Here is a quick write by Kenzie Sweet which was shared in our assembly -
The wind roared like a lion as the rain hammered on the windows. Outside the ship, the storm was still raging. Peeking out, I could see waves like mountains and a grey sky. I really hope this trip will be over soon.
We have been enjoying our Hot Shots tennis clinics with Georgia, and we are really improving our skills! Many of us are looking forward to competing in the hot shots tennis competition in a couple of weeks.
All classrooms at OLOR have a designated time for eating fruit in our morning sessions. We are currently finding large amounts of fruit, especially apples, discarded into the compost bucket with very little eaten.
Teachers will be instructing students to put large pieces of uneaten fruit back into their lunch boxes. Plenty of time is provided for eating the fruit, but if your child chooses not to eat a large portion of it, we ask that you check their lunch box and provide other alternatives. If possible, cutting up larger fruit into recyclable containers or bags would be appreciated.
School lunches will resume next Friday, September 10. Please place in your orders by Thursday.
This week we have experienced our first taste of the warmer weather. Please ensure your child has their school hat with them daily and a leakproof water bottle. Recently, there are a large number of students coming to school without a water bottle and they are relying on our water taps for a drink. In these uncertain times of COVID-19 and especially the Delta strain, I ask that all students have a labelled water bottle at school to reduce any risks associated with drinking directly from the water fountains.
