Last Friday, the staff from Our Lady of the River, St. Joseph’s in Renmark, and St. Albert’s in Loxton took time to pause and reflect on a staff reflection day focused on art and spirituality. The day included a fascinating exploration of Australian Indigenous artworks led by Fr. Elio Capra from the Catholic Theological College. It was a unique blend of learning and laughter, as Fr. Elio shared his knowledge and wisdom with a comedic touch.
The day began with an exploration of Indigenous Spirituality, allowing the staff to immerse themselves in the stories and traditions of First Nations peoples. Following that, we looked at Indigenous artworks where the artists captured their Christian spirituality through biblical imagery.
The day ended with a creative session, where the staff became artists themselves, creating unique pieces of art that captured the essence of their school's spirituality. This hands-on activity strengthened their connection to their shared spiritual journey and celebrated the diverse expressions of faith within the community. It was a great opportunity for the staff to connect with and celebrate the OLOR story and values.
Retreat days such as this are vital for our school because they nurture our staff's faith formation and help us reflect on how we can shine our own lights in the world to make it a better place. Our collaborative art display is featured below. I’m sure you will agree that we have many talented artists on staff who have beautifully captured our OLOR story!

Spirit of Love,
As our confirmation students prepare to be commissioned, we ask for your guidance and protection. Bless them with wisdom, courage, and a deep sense of your presence in their lives. May they embrace their new roles with grace and commitment, reflecting your love and truth in all they do, acting as a light to others and an example of your love.
In Your holy name, we pray,
Amen
In love and light,
Rosemary Perre
APRIM
Two weeks ago, we celebrated the Sacrament of Confirmation. This year, 10 students from our school and St Joseph’s Renmark, as well as local parishioners, celebrated becoming an adult in the church. Bishop Karol Kulczyzki presided over the Mass, and Fr Hau concelebrated as well. We congratulate Ocea, Ally and Lilly on this important part of their faith journey, and I thank Mrs Perre and Mrs Grocke from St Joseph’s for their support and formation of the students.
In the last two weeks I have also been fortunate to attend two events at other local Catholic schools. St Joseph’s Barmera held their 70th anniversary and it was a wonderful celebration. With our 90th birthday coming up in a couple of years, it was great to reflect on the foresight and foundations that the Sisters of St Joseph had in establishing our schools. I also attended the opening of the new buildings at St Francis of Assisi College in Renmark. This was yet another wonderful addition to the college and the liturgy and opening was attended by Bishop Karol, Executive Director of CESA Dr Neil McGoran, Pt Pirie Director Nichii Mardon, Chair of SACCS John Neate, and many other guests. After the opening Neil, Nichii and John visited OLOR and I shared with them plans I hope to realise in our school for new and improved facilities.
The Chinese proverb, “If you are planning for a year, sow rice; if you are planning for a decade, plant trees; if you are planning for a lifetime, educate people” is so true when we think about it. We spend so much time thinking about next week or next month, that sometimes we forget to look further. One thing I also take from the quote is that we always need to be thinking of the future, both near and far, if we are truly planning for life ahead. At OLOR, we try to look at what we can do here and now to make things better, but also what we can do to map out the next ten years. Our aim is not just to give students a good education, but to help develop the next generation of adults in our community. We want them to leave OLOR knowing how to care for each other, themselves and the world in which we live. This is an important task that will benefit all of us if we get it right.

OLOR Multicultural Celebration
Cricket Clinic
On Friday in week 6 students were involved in cricket clinics at school with two representatives from SACA. Students participated in various activities and had fun developing their skills.
We have been given some of these flyers. Please collect one from the front office if you are interested.
Ocea Vallelonga played in the River and Hills girls hockey team in Adelaide this week. The team experienced a few wins, a few draws and a few losses over the three day event. The girls played well as a team and had great willingness to listen and follow directions. It was a great experience for all involved.
SAPSASA Cricket
On the 12th of September, 10 students from OLOR competed at SAPSASA Cricket in Berri. Throughout the day students developed their cricketing skills and knowledge. The competing was fierce and competitive, we played four games and won three, we finished fifth out of eight teams. A highlight of the day was Armaan’s hat trick in our final game. Van was lucky to receive the Sportsmanship Award for our school.
Unlocking a Bright Future: The Power of the First 1000 Days
Reading with babies isn't just fun – it’s super important for their growth! Here’s why:
- Boosts Language Skills: Reading books, talking about pictures, and sharing stories help babies learn speech sounds, words, and how to talk.
- Early Literacy: Doing these activities every day helps babies get used to books and words, setting them up to be great readers when they grow up.
- Fires Up Imagination: Stories make babies dream big and learn about the world around them.
- Bonding Time: Reading together is a special time for you and your baby to connect and enjoy each other’s company.
Fun Tips for Reading with Babies:
Start Early: You can begin reading to your baby from birth!
Quiet Time: Newborns love calm reading sessions. By 12 months, they'll be excited and involved in story time.
Interactive Reading: Point out words and pictures and make your voice lively with different tones.
Pick Fun Books: Babies love books with rhymes, rhythm, and repetition.
Remember, every time you read with your baby, you're helping them grow smarter and stronger! So, grab a book and start the adventure together!
A reminder to please inform the school each day when your child is absent from school, as we need to record a reason for their absence (illness, family reasons, appointment etc). You may message on Seesaw, fill in the form on the Schoolzine app (SZapp), or phone the school. If we do not hear from you, student absences are recorded as 'Unapproved Absences' (and if there are too many of these throughout the term it is automatically reported to the government as persistent unapproved absences).
We do send SMS messages each day to try and find reasons for any unapproved absences, and appreciate parents responding to these messages.
Many children will have a positive experience starting school or moving from primary to high school and despite some initial nervousness, most will settle in very quickly. However, we know some parents/carers may be very concerned about the upcoming changes e.g. buying uniforms, books or devices and that's where we can help.
